GAFSO - In Detail.
Group Action For Social Order

In 1997, when there were imminent signs of escalation of civil war and the breakdown of the communal harmony that existed from times immemorial among the three communities that inhabited the district of Ampara, this organization was formed in an effort to patch up the differences and to cater to the needs of the displaced persons and the education of the children in IDP camps.

The founding fathers of this organization were a few kind hearted government servants, reputed social workers and generous businessmen from the three communities. They were very careful in choosing the name of the organization as they felt it should reflect their goal to work for the creation of peace and harmony and to serve the needy in all communities. After much deliberation it was named GROUP ACTION FOR SOCIAL ORDER (GAFSO) as it was a collective action to bring about order and peace among the communities.

With a view to gain legal recognition it was registered as a Voluntary Organization with the Government Agent, Ampara District and as a Company under the Companies Act of Sri Lanka.

Initially, we provided relief from contributions made by our members and from other well wishers. Gradually we formed community based organizations to assist in our rehabilitation work. During the aftermath of tsunami our volunteers worked along with International NGOs day and night to help the affected and distressed.

During the last one decade our organization has grown slowly and steadily and we are happy to record that this organization is now recognized as one of the best NGO in this District.

We have now links with more than 350 smaller community based organizations including many Women's Organizations throughout Ampara district and all the major international funding agencies like UNICEF, UNDP, UNHCR, ADB, USAID, NECORD SOLIDAR, CIDA, FAO, RELIEF INTERNATIONAL, ISLAMIC RELIEF, GOAL, NECCDEP ETC.

Our aim now is to continue to function as a Good Samaritan to help the distressed, victimized and marginalized vulnerable human beings among all three communities beyond caste, creed, religious or gender considerations.

To carry out large scale relief, rehabilitation reconstruction and livelihood development works we solicit generous help from national and international donor agencies,

Thank you,
